Vittorio Malingri Holds Solo Record

Vittorio Malingri crossed the finish line at Guadeloupe on the 28 April at 5:24:12 a.m. U.T.C. It took him 13 days, 17 hours and 48 minutes to travel 2,545 miles from Dakar, Senegal to Guadeloupe, Antilles, single handedly, without assistance or stops aboard Royal Oak, a 6mt catamaran, equipped with Neil Pryde sails.

This is the first time anyone has attempted single handedly this route and now the official record for this solo crossing and defined as extreme sailing.

Vittorio’s first comments were: “It was a wonderful experience regardless of the difficulties and problems that I encountered. The boat worked marvelously, apart from the problems I had with the solar panels that affected my energy supply and therefore the functioning of the automatic pilot and phones. The biggest problem is that I had to do everything with only one hand, with the automatic pilot out my other hand was needed on the steering. At night, for short intervals I tied the rudder in order to rest. I did not suffer hunger or thirst. From a physical point of view, it was much less difficult than a leg on the around the world race in a larger boat. Now I am going to sleep in a bed. See you later.”

Once again, the numbers of this quest for the record:

  • Route from Dakar, Senegal to Guadeloupe, Antilles for a total of 2,545 miles aboard Royal Oak, a 6.09 meter catamaran.

  • The only reference point to compare with on this route was made by the two Frenchmen Pierre-Yves Moreau and Benoit Lequin, which last December took 11 days 11 hours and 25 minutes to complete in doubles.

Until the wind held up Vittorio was in perfect time with the record time, and was actually in advantage on April 18. Then, slowly but surely the Anticyclone of the Azores began to slacken and the intensity of the wind went down to 15 knots and this lightening of the wind did not make it possible to repeat or improve the hourly averages of the Frenchmen.

Malingri remains however, the first navigator to challenge the route, single-handedly and his is the reference time and record to beat for a solo crossing.

Vittorio Malingri to Challenge the Dakar-Guadeluope Record

Stratford, Connecticut – In a route that follows the 150 rhumb line and taking advantage of the Trade Winds, Vittorio Malingri will attempt to break the current 11day,11hour, and 25minute record for 2545 nautical mile Dakar-Guadeluope trans-Atlantic crossing.

The attempt will be carried out on the “Royal Oak” a 20’ / 6m open catamaran that is equipped with a full quiver of Neil Pryde sails from large spinnakers for use in light air to the state-of-the-art mainsail in Aramid fabric designed to be used in the widest range of conditions imaginable. The high tech fabrics utilized in the sails has been provided by Dimension/Polyant and the criteria was to build the lightest sails possible that could withstand the rigors of a trans-Atlantic crossing. Neil Pryde worked closely with D/P to establish the fabric parameters and then went to work engineering the sails to stand up to this rugged application.

Weather-wise the crossing is divided in three phases:
The start from Africa sailing beyond the Cape Verde islands in which one is sailing predominantly on a sustained beam wind.
From Cape Verde the role of the weather router becomes vital, as it is imperative to stay in contact with the trade winds, a difficult task in these recent years of climate instability. During this part of the passage low-pressure systems normally positioned to the North can transit into this area creating opposite wind direction creating less than optimum conditions.
Once through the Trade Winds and on the final approach to the Caribbean, the last two days always presents a risk of weather instability with strong winds, rain, or total lack of breeze.

Vittorio at age 46 has a truly impressive blue water sailing resume, having done his first circumnavigation of the globe as a young child and in the intervening years has done much single handed racing including the Europe 1 Star and the Vendee Globe challenges. In the last three years alone he has amassed 60,000 miles in ocean sailing.

Neil Pryde Sails Chosen As OEM Sail Maker for the Nickels Mutineer 15

Stratford, Connecticut – The Nickels Boatworks of Fenton, Michigan is no stranger to one design class sailing dinghies and to their credit have had a significant impact on the continuing longevity of many popular one design classes such as the Lighting, Buccaneer 18, Rebel and Snipe.

New for 2008, the Nickels Boatworks will introduce production of the popular Mutineer 15. Designed by Rod Macalpine-Downie & Dick Gibbs (Buccaneer 18) and originally produced by Chrysler Marine. The Mutineer 15 first made it's appearance in 1971 and soon after became and American favorite. Thirty-six years in existence, and with the rights to it's production having been bought and sold at least three times the Mutineer is a survivor in an extremely difficult market. With over 8000 Mutineer 15 having been produced to date, the Mutineer 15 has proven itself to be a fun, well rounded sailing craft that meets the needs of a broad spectrum of sailors, from family fun to competitive one design racing.

In 2003 when the Nickel Boatworks purchased the Mutineer 15 molds, the proven characteristics were exactly the pedigree and distinctions that they were looking for increasing their popular line of exciting one-design sailing dinghies. Quality, value, performance and versatility are just some of the virtues that all sailors are looking for when considering the vast array of sailing dinghies that are available today.

With this clearly in mind, the Nickels Boat works chose Neil Pryde Sails to be the OEM sail maker for their latest production. Neil Pryde Sails has years of experience in one design sail making and is the sail maker for many popular one-design classes. The sail design focus for the Nickles Mutineer 15 will be to create race ready, class legal sails with all of the needed essentials that both racing and recreational sailors rely on. Among many other features, Neil Pryde Mutineer 15 sails will exhibit proven construction, excellent shape characteristics, ease of control, vision windows, draft stripes, tell-tails and tell-tail windows. Though the Nickles Boatworks is by no means limiting their focus on a the Mutineer 15 racing circuit, they do recognize the well rounded nature of the Mutineer 15 and so by providing class legal sails of this caliber with the Nickles Mutineer 15, they are effectively opening up their market to allow non-competitive Mutineer 15 sailors to join in on the fun should they get the itch to go around the buoys. Alternatively, the racing sailor purchasing a Nickles Mutineer 15 will be pleased to know that their new Nickels Mutineer 15 is being delivered with a suit of Neil Pryde sails that are race ready and will allow them to be very competitive out of the box. Neil Pryde Mutineer 15 racing sails will be available in 2008.

New French Sails Agent To Join Neil Pryde Sails

France – Neil Pryde Sails announces that Cyrille Génin has recently signed an agreement to be the Neil Pryde Yacht Sails Agent in France.

Cyrille Génin has a long history of sailing. Having been introduced to the sport of sailing at an early age, Cyrille developed a passion for sailing early in his life, which through hard work and experiences, is even stronger today. By age 16, Cyrille was sailing year round, with winter sailing demanding his focus while steering through a slalom course of the looming ice slabs which filled the half frozen lakes that the Frostbite races were held in. This training served him well, as similar demands of his focus would follow as Cyrille’s career in the industry grew and he became in grater demand. In 1989 Cyrille joined Velazur Sailmakers in Cannes, France to further develop his working knowledge of the sport. In 1992, Cyrille had the opportunity to sail in the Canary Islands, which turned into a seven year sailing adventure and introduced him into business ventures outside of the sailing circuit. After years with a focus on sailing, Cyrille had the opportunity to change tacks and returned to Italy to pursue a director's position with a marketing firm, and later as a consultant for a prominent currency exchange firm in Monaco. Even with his new positions, Cyrille continued sailing in his time off.

With Cyrille’s reputable sailing abilities and marketing experience he was soon being pursued by several international sail manufacturers, and eventually accepted a position with North Sails France, to develop the Super Yacht market in the Riviera. With one foot in the marketing business world and the other in sailing Cyrille was invited to participate in various racing campaigns and helped as an organizer for several French Syndicates for the America's Cup challenge as well as a sponsoring consultant for one of the AC teams and French AC skippers. To name a few some of Cyrille’s projects include marketing campaigns for Oem, Jeep, L'Oreal Paris, Team CHINA and Maxis Boats.

In March 2007, Cyrille Genin recognized the growing support of Neil Pryde Sails in the European market and joined forces with Neil Pryde Sails as the Neil Pryde Agent in the rapidly growing and dynamic French sailing circut. Neil Pryde Sails is pleased to have Cyrille Genin part of the Neil Pryde Sails growing ring of international sail agents.

Graphics Can Brighten Your Day

Neil Pryde utilizes several methods in apply graphics to sails, but by far the sharpest is our 'inlay' technique. With this system, we create the image digitally and then cut the image out of the same spinnaker nylon that we use in the sail. The sail is cut away, so that the image is in effect the sail.

Visually the impact is startling, as the artwork literally jumps off of the sail in a way that painted graphics or overlays do not achieve.

Blue Water Sailing

Featured on the cover of the August Blue Water Sailing magazine is the lovely Lorilie, a Dolphin 460 Catamaran built by Dolphin Catamarans in Brazil and imported to North America by the Multihull Company—outfitted with Neil Pryde Sails.

The main and jib are both constructed from Challenge Sailcloth “SpectraStripe” which is a woven balanced Dacron with 23,000dpi of Spectra in the warp and a Spectra rip stop in the fill. This exciting material lends itself to applications that require the sophistication of the Tri-Radial Load Mapping panel layouts but the hand and durability of Dacron. The real beauty of this fabric is that it offers the best of the laminated world, without the potential for mold and mildew that is often associated with cruising laminates.

Neil Pryde Fast Forwards to MAXX Fabric & New Fabric Updates

Milford, CT. --- Neil Pryde Sails International has successfully been leading the market in MAXX fabric sails and designs since the inception of this exciting material from Contender Sailcloth. New for 2006 is an updated line of the fabrics that have slightly new constructions that will further enhance these already great fabrics.

MAXX Carbon fabric has high modulus Carbon and Technora fibres arranged asymmetrically along 4 different axis within the cloth. These multiple angles of fibres are better able to disperse and subsequently stabilize any changes in load path throughout the sail.

Sails built with MAXX fabric are built in span-wise horizontal panels instead of the traditional tri-radial construction, taking advantage of the multi-axis design of the material. This horizontal collection of panels reduces the net total of seams and as they run horizontally and the results are sails that are incredibly smooth and fair in shape.

MAXX fabric material provides enhanced fibre flex life and reduced shrinkage both of which increase the working lifespan of the sail. This same technology makes the ‘hand’ of the material quite soft, so sails are easy to handle and store. An additional benefit of the multiple angles of fibres is this network of yarns provide unprecedented puncture and tear resistance

These technical breakthroughs and patented technology all add up to smoother sails that hold their designed shape longer.

Neil Pryde Introduces the Vertically Battened In-Mast Furling Mainsail

Overview:

The Neil Pryde Sails in-mast battened furling mainsail adds a more ‘classic’ look to the visual aesthetics of the mainsail while improving the aerodynamic efficiency and increasing the area of the mainsail. In working to develop this mainsail our goal was to provide improved performance without the loss of handling ease, which makes in-mast, furling systems so popular. Neil Pryde Sails had built this type of furling mainsail for many years, but generally for sailing dinghies. It wasn't until recently that consumer demand for better performance from today's cruising yachts spurred us to investigate, design and test these new and exciting mainsails for larger yachts

Details:
In-mast furling mains are generally about 18-20% smaller than the classic mainsails and the these new mainsails gain back 50% of this lost area. The performance gains due to increased area are obvious, but we also gain an improvement in upwind performance due to the increased leech area, which makes dramatic improvements to the foil efficiency. The result is better airflow and increased pointing ability over the conventional furling mainsail. These sails are designed fairly flat to ensure ease of mechanical furling and with a specific amount of clew “rise” also to help facilitate smooth furling. Each mainsail is equipped with 4 vertical battens that are inserted with an internal Velcro tensioning system. In addition an external U.V. clew cover to protect the exposed sail surface from sunlight when furled is standard.
All Neil Pryde Furling mainsails are equipped with a safety clew ring that can be used in the unlikely chance of clew block failure. Patch styles include reefing ‘buffer’ patches at head and tack that help to disperse sail loads when reefed.

Use:
In testing, this sail responds well to all normal trim inputs; traveler, mainsheet and foot tensions. Reefing is infinitely adjustable and the roach fully supported by all the battens when reefed to a deep ‘first’ reef. Furling is easy and controlled. The sail is fitted with a leechline and tells-tails at the upper battens. This system and sails were originally developed with US Spars and Beneteau Yachts USA. The sails were exhaustively tested on their boats and mast sections with great success. With other sections careful analysis of the spar is required prior to building any new and custom sail.

Neil Pryde Fast Forwards to Load Path
 Sails and FiberPath Technology

Milford, CT. March 2005 --- Neil Pryde Sails International is licensed by Genesis International to produce Load Path Membrane sails under the USA patent No. 4,708,080 These "080" compliant sails are designed and built with transverse (crosscut) panels and seams with structural yarns of polyester, Vectran, Technora, carbon fiber and/or Twaron.

This technology allows us to utilize our existing design software and take our proven CAD designs and shapes directly into this new method of sail construction. With the FiberPath technology we can address the multiple directional loads within a given sail and create a fiber layout that addresses both primary and off-axis loads. The sails are designed in a cross-cut configuration, giving the designer the optimum control over sail shape while reducing the number of seams throughout the sail. The result is a sail that is incredibly smooth and has a broad working range, due to the dynamic implementation of the 'load mapping' of yarns.

Each individual panel is cut to match the three-dimensional design mold and then is strung with a series of curved yarns, which align the load paths of the sail. The yarns will vary in type and density depending on the application and sail type. The panels are then assembled using the Dimension / Polyant Ultrabond system which virtually makes the sail one piece.

Beneteau 44.7 and Carbon Fiber Technology

This German 44.7 has just finished her first successful season of racing with her new Neil Pryde Carbon sails. The working set of sails are built using the Dimension /Polyant GPL line of Carbon/Technora fabrics. Over the season they have proved to very fast (resulting in a great first season of race results) and the durability of the fabric to date is much better than a comparable Aramid fabric.
The German racing season to date has been exciting for us as our racing sails on Dehler 29's, Dehler 36's, Sprinta-Sport boats and Winner 11,20's have all had great racing results with new Neil Pryde sails.

Winning Ways for a Beneteau 36.7 in North Carolina

From a customer in N.C.:

Outrigger Yacht Club, The Commodore Cup. SSW winds 8 -18, on an 8.7 mile course. Race one we won by 6 seconds over a Soveral 33.

We flew the #1 up a short windward leg then followed with a long leeward leg. The wind stared to build near the leeward mark so we made last second sail change to the #3 while the other boats didn’t. I got inside at the mark and we just sailed higher and faster.

We rounded in third and passed both boats for the win. (Line honors and corrected). The second race we had a halyard jam 2 minutes before the start so we had use a wing halyard to raise the #3. We started 100 yards below the line. On the downwind run we stayed in the middle and rode good puffs all the way down.

Race Results from Holland, Long Island and Texas

The Standfast line of racing and cruising yachts built in Holland held their annual "Standfast Weekend" at the end of August. There were 40 boats in attendance and Neil Pryde Sails scored impressive victories in the racing.

Christine a Standfast 43 was 1st in class One and First Overall. She was equipped with a full inventory of Neil Pryde Sails including a Radial Dacron Furling Headsail, a cruising laminate mainsail and racing spinnaker.

Noordwind, a Raider type was 1st in Class Two, sailing with an inventory of Neil Pryde Dacron racing sails.

Spirit of Go, a Standfast 40 and winner of the Standfast 40 Trophy was equipped with a new Neil Pryde cruising laminate mainsail, genoa and new Nylon Spinnaker. The sails arrived 17 hours prior to the start of the racing and were fitted just prior to sailing!

Perennial Neil Pryde Sails fan and customer, Mark Melvin, raced his Beneteau 461 Devocean to a First in Class and Seventh Overall in the Stamford Yacht Club Vineyard race. Mark also captured the Corinthian Trophy for best corrected time by PHRF yacht on the return time from Buzzard’s Bay Entrance Tower.

The 238-mile Vineyard race course stretches through Long Island Sound from Shippan Point, through the swirling currents of the Race or Plum Gut, past Block Island, and on to the light tower at the entrance to Buzzard's Bay, to return leaving Block Island to starboard en route to the finish in Stamford Harbor. Begun in 1932, it has attracted the finest sailors and fastest boats for nearly 70 years, and its intricacies and challenges bring them back time after time.

Marc Luxenburg, sailing his Hunter 35.5 On The Mark II, sailed to a second in class and second overall in the Non-Spinnaker Division of the annual Around Long Island Race.

Dean Snider and crew David Lindsey (our outstanding Neil Pryde Sails Agent in Houston, Texas) won the Ensign Class Nationals with an impressive 9 point total, beating a two time Mallory Cup Champion in a heated race for gold.

Resurrection on the Chesapeake

When Angus Murdock, the curator of the Reedville Fisherman’s Museum called upon our agents Dan and Brett Winters of Dan Winters Sailmakers, concerning sails for the restored Chesapeake Bay skipjack, the Claud W. Somers, we were more than casually interested. The Somers which was built in 1911 on Young’s Creek, Virginia and had logged many working sea mile, was now destined for a life of leisure; no longer carrying oysters she instead will introduce new generations to the historical importance of working sailboats and the seaman that worked the Chesapeake.

Angus and his crew had done a magnificent job of restoring the Somer and while they wanted sails that would be durable and last a long time, they also listed as a requirement that “they want to beat every other skipjack on the Bay!” Working closely with Dan and Brett, we handcrafted a sail plan that included the non-contemporary items such as mast hoops on the mainsail, lazy jacks and a half clubfoot on the jib. The sail plan was carefully constructed in our CAD program and we worked carefully to identify the aspects that have worked well on similar past projects and couple them to the challenges of this particular job. Dan and Brett provided excellent measurements of the boat and rig and together we brought all the parameters together to build an excellent set of sails.

Long Distance Orders Not a Problem

Subject: RE: Sails

The results are attached. The new mainsail is fantastic. I'm able to point higher by about 5 degrees - the battens really shape the foil well. Great to have loose-footed also. Thanks for your attention to detail. Quality of workmanship is excellent.....

Thanks again!

Jon

Through a series of emails, digital photo's and technical specification sheets Neil Pryde was able to build this beautiful mainsail (and storm trysail) for our customer in Australia and delivered the sails to Papua New Guinea without ever having set foot on the boat! As a company that originated in Hong Kong, we have tremendous experience working long distance and logistically difficult orders and can certainly help you if you have similar needs.
