NEIL PRYDE SAILS Texas
agent since 1989 is CAMERON SAILS/ CLASSIC CANVAS. Operating in
Seabrook, Texas (south of Houston on Galveston Bay), Cameron
Sails has been in the sailmaking, canvas, and rigging business at
the same loft location since 1976. The original owner, the late
John Cameron, and current owner David Lindsay have been active in
one designs (SNIPES, FLYING SCOTS, ENSIGNS, 470's, J-24 and
J-22), and expanded into IOR/PHRF handicap racing as these areas
expanded in the 70's and 80's.
| Although
"performance" sailors at heart, Cameron and
Lindsay have always been close to the pulse of Texas
sailing's largest market: cruising. In the late 80's with
15 years of sailmaking and repair expertise, they decided
to come on board with NEIL PRYDE SAILS. "It really
was the best performance cruising sail built on the
planet", Lindsay says. " As the influx of
Pacific Rim sailing yachts hit the states, so did NP
sails. They were so ruggedly built, that repairing them
(seldom needed) or adding a sun cover became a MAJOR endeavor. We realized
this was the future of
sailmaking." When NEIL PRYDE advertised for agents
in North America, Cameron Sails was one of the first
lofts on board, and has become one of their fastest
growing. With the advent of specific lines of sails
(INSHORE, CRUISE, CRUISE PLUS), and the addition of
American sail fabrics, NEIL PRYDE now build over 80% of
the new sails sold by Cameron Sails. "It really is
the best of both worlds", adds Lindsay. |
![]() "We keep active in sailmaking, and intend to do so. As far as high quality, world class, performance cruising and racing sails, NEIL PRYDE is the sail. Cameron Sails is also very active in the production of custom marine canvas and industrial fabrication through their other division, Classic Canvas. Managed by Susan Scruggs, this 5 person operation has built thousands of bimini tops, dodgers, awnings, and every other conceivable cover for boats of all types. Classic Canvas also fabricates covers for the |
aerospace and petrochemical industries including "light proof" enclosure covers for the NASA astronaut training program. This work is totally on a custom basis. "We work very hard in these projects, and they now comprise about 10 percent of our total business." In order to meet the ever increasing demand for NEIL PRYDE SAILS in Texas, longtime friend and sailor Charles Milby Jr. has been added to the Cameron Sails staff. His primary responsibility is in selling NEIL PRYDE SAILS to the growing Gulf Coast market, and to sail with each of his customers to individualize their needs. "I'm so impressed with the overall quality of the PRYDE sails. They almost sell themselves. The focus is to support the owners and what they want to do," says Milby. Milby and Lindsay have several current projects including a full inventory (and canvas) for a CT-54, racing with the first PENTEX mainsail on Galveston ( on a J-36), and an overall win in the Galveston Bay Frostbite Series on the Santana 35 APACHE last month. |
